# Add stages to a job

When you create a job, you define basic information about the job, and then add one or more on-demand or live stages to the job in the order in which you want candidates to move through them.

You can add as many stages as you need in order to customize the candidate experience for that job.

## Add a stage to an existing interview process (quick steps)

Use these steps when a job already has a workflow and you want to add a new stage (for example, an on-demand web/video screen or a live interview).

1. Open the job and go to **Job Summary**.
2. Scroll to the bottom of the stage list/cards and select **Add Stage** (may also appear as **Add Interview Stage**, depending on your view).
3. Choose the stage type.
   - Options are typically grouped under **On-demand** and **Live Interview**.
   - Select the option you want (for example, **WEB/VIDEO**).
4. If prompted, choose how candidates should advance into this new stage:
   - **Manually select and move candidates** (default), or
   - **Advance candidates based on…** and then choose the rule/criteria.
5. Select **Save & Continue**.

The new stage is created with default settings and is added to the end of the current workflow. You can then configure the stage settings and (if needed) reorder stages.

## To add stages to a job

1. If you haven't already done so, [create the job](https://recruiter-help.hirevue-app.com/en-us/articles/create-jobs-blM85dTaLX) to which you want to add stages.
   * When creating the job, you typically complete the **Job Details** (for example, **Title** and **Job Requisition**) and any required access controls such as **Assigned Groups** (if groups are enabled for your environment).
   * When you select **Save & Continue**, HireVue opens the job in the **Job Summary** view (and, in some experiences, immediately prompts you to add your first stage).
2. Add an interview stage.
   * **If the job already has stages:** from **Job Summary**, scroll to the bottom of the stage list/cards, select **Add Interview Stage** (or **Add Stage**, depending on your view), and then select the stage type you want to add to your job.

   * **If the job has no stages yet:** HireVue prompts you to add your first stage.
     * To set up an on-demand video interview stage, click **WEB/VIDEO** under the **On-Demand** section (this may also appear as **On-Demand – Web/Video**).
     * A new interview stage is created and labeled **Stage 1** by default.
3. (Optional) In the **Interview Stage Name** field, type a name you want to assign to the stage to differentiate it from other stages, and then save.
4. For each stage you add, configure the available options as needed:
   * [Scheduling](/articles/1dcb72bb-1af4-4418-8194-fb655a33f594) (live interviews only)
   * Candidate experience
   * [Assessment](/articles/4ab35534-cdbb-49f0-aaaa-06c918551fe2)
   * [Interview questions](/articles/83f87e1d-70ba-4cba-8959-66adae964f49)
   * [Reviewer options](https://recruiter-help.hirevue-app.com/en-us/articles/review-interviews-vViPPSIwFq) (on-demand interviews only)
   * [Documents](/articles/99123c52-fee8-45e3-a6b6-c71de3c6df78)
   * [Review invitation email](/articles/749a96a9-f3c3-4312-954a-d9f8d7af7f03) (on-demand web/video interviews only)

   After you add an on-demand web/video stage, you can proceed to configure the **Interview Questions** panel to add the questions candidates will answer.

## Configure common stage settings (Interview Questions and Candidate Experience)

After you add a stage, you can configure the stage settings directly from the job’s **Job Summary** page.

1. On the job’s main page (Job Summary), locate the stage card you want to configure.
2. Configure **Interview Questions** for that stage:

   1. Click **Interview Questions** to expand the section and view the questions currently included for that stage.
   2. Review the question details shown in the list (for example, response/answer type, recording attempts/retakes, and any response time limits).
   3. Add, remove, or reorder questions as needed. For detailed question setup, see [Interview questions](/articles/83f87e1d-70ba-4cba-8959-66adae964f49).
3. Configure **Candidate Experience** for that stage:

   1. Select **Candidate experience** (sometimes shown as a button or link on the stage card) to open the Candidate Experience settings.
   2. Update the options you need (availability varies by stage type and your organization’s configuration), such as:
      * Experience/layout settings
      * Candidate submission deadline
      * Stage expiration date
      * Candidate options such as requiring an introduction recording and allowing (or requiring) document uploads
   3. Select **Save** (or **Save & Close**) to apply your changes.

For more detail on deadline/expiration and other candidate options, see [Candidate options](/articles/f5f3cc70-9682-45d3-821b-f46313abbfbd).

## Continue adding stages

1. If desired, select **Add Interview Stage** to add a second stage to the job.
2. If you add a second (or subsequent) stage, specify how you want candidates to advance to the next stage:

   **Tip**: When you add a second (or subsequent) stage, a pop-up window appears asking, **“How do you want candidates to advance to this next stage?”** Use this prompt to set an advancement rule between the two stages.

   **Manually select and move candidates**

   You are responsible for reviewing the candidate interview from the previous stage, and then using the Candidate Details page to manually advance them to this stage.

   **Advance candidates based on [criteria]**

   HireVue automatically moves candidates to this stage, based on whether they meet or exceed defined criteria, without manual intervention from you. When you select this option, you must also define the advancement criteria you want to use.

   **Interview submission (on-demand only)**

   Advance candidates who submit their on-demand interviews. When you select interview submission as the advancement criteria for an on-demand interview, HireVue waits a configured length of time before advancing the candidate to the next stage. This delay is configured at an application level, and is specific to your organization.

   **Candidate response score (on-demand only)**

   Advance candidates who meet or exceed a specific candidate response score when responding to single- or multiple-select questions. When candidates select a response to each question, the assigned score is added to the total.

   Candidate response scores are values you can assign to each response for single- or multiple-select on-demand interview questions. When candidates select a response to each question, the assigned score is added to the total. When candidates submit their interview, they earn a total response score that is compared with the defined threshold to determine whether or not they advance to the next stage.

   **Assessment score (on-demand only)**

   Advance candidates who earn a specific assessment score when responding to assessments during on-demand interviews. Assessments are tools used in on-demand stages to evaluate candidates based on standardized third-party assessments.

   When you select this option, candidates who meet or achieve the assessment score set in the Assessments panel of the previous stage will automatically advance to this stage.

   **Note**: Assessments is a licensed feature and may not be available for your application. For more information, contact your HireVue Administrator.

   **Star rating**

   Advance candidates based on the number of stars a reviewer assigns to the candidate. You define the number of stars the candidate must earn before they're automatically advanced to the next stage. Then, the first submitted review will either automatically advance the candidate or the candidate will not advance.

   **Important**! Automated advancement is based on the first submitted star rating review. If the first rating from a review doesn't meet the criteria, the candidate will not advance to the next stage, regardless of subsequent ratings from reviewers. Therefore, this criteria is best used for single reviewers.

   **Recommendation**

   **Important**! Automated advancement is based on the first submitted Recommendation review. If the first review doesn't meet the criteria, the candidate will not advance to the next stage, regardless of subsequent reviews. Therefore, this criteria is best used for single reviewers.

   Advance candidates based on a recommendation in the first submitted review. A reviewer evaluating candidate interviews can assign a Recommendation to the interview, thereby indicating their approval of the candidate. If the first reviewer does not recommend the candidate, or does not provide a recommendation as part of their review, the candidate will not advance to the next stage, regardless of subsequent recommendations from reviewers.

   **Review score**

   **Important**! Automated advancement is based on the first submitted review score. If the first review doesn't meet the criteria, the candidate will not advance to the next stage, regardless of subsequent reviews. Therefore, this criteria is best used for single reviewers.

   Advance candidates based on the review score calculated in the first submitted review. When you choose to advance a candidate based on review score, you must also define the minimum score the candidate must earn in order to advance to the next stage.

   Review scores are defined in the Review Format section of the Interview Questions panel within each stage. For each question you add to an interview, you can define the review format you want reviewers to follow when providing their feedback. If you select a Single Select or Multiple Select review type, then you can also define the choices from which you want reviewers to select, and the scores you want to assign to each choice.

   When reviewers are reviewing the candidate interview, they choose from the list you defined, and the associated score is then assigned to the response for that candidate. If the score from the first submitted review meets or exceeds the review score threshold defined for advancement, then the candidate will automatically advance to the next stage. Otherwise, the candidate will not advance, regardless of subsequent reviews. To move the candidate to the next stage you must manually advance them.

## Configure an automatic advancement rule (score-based example)

If you choose **Advance candidates based on**, then:

1. Select the advancement basis from the dropdown list (for example, **Candidate response score**).
2. Specify the condition (for example, *Advance each candidate if they have a total score greater than or equal to* [value]).
3. Enter the score/threshold value.
4. Click **Save & Continue** to apply the rule.

After you save, the advancement rule appears between the two stages on the Job Summary overview page. You can edit the rule later by clicking the pencil icon on the advancement rule.

## Edit an advancement rule between stages (job template/workflow)

If a workflow already has stages set up and you need to change how candidates move from one stage to the next, you can edit the advancement rule between the two stages.

1. Open the job template (or job) you want to configure.
2. In the workflow between two stages, click the pencil icon next to the advancement rule section (for example, **Manually advance candidates to the next stage**).
3. In the pop-up window, select **Advance candidates based on**.
4. Use the dropdown menu to select the criterion for advancement (for example, **Submission**). If prompted, enter any required threshold or condition.
5. Click **Save & Continue** to apply the rule.

## Next step: start inviting candidates

When you are finished adding and configuring stages, you can begin adding candidates to your first stage.

* For on-demand stages, select **Add Candidate to Job** to add a candidate and send the invitation.
* For details, see [Invite candidates to on-demand interviews](/articles/d187a2a8-9285-4009-a31b-eaeae302a560).
